How to Fax A Prescription
Faxing prescriptions is one of the most common reasons healthcare providers use AvoFax. Whether you're a physician sending a script to a pharmacy or a clinic forwarding refill authorizations, here's how to do it securely and get a delivery receipt.
Estimated time: 3 minutes · 4 steps
Prepare the prescription document
If the prescription is already digital (from your EHR or as a PDF), you're ready to go. If it's handwritten on a prescription pad, use the AvoFax mobile app's scanner to photograph it. The scanner will straighten the image and enhance the text for legibility.
Tip: Make sure the prescription includes all required elements: patient name, date, medication, dosage, quantity, refills, and prescriber signature. Pharmacies will reject incomplete scripts.
Open AvoFax and start a new fax
Log in to AvoFax on the web or open the mobile app. Tap Send Fax and enter the pharmacy's fax number. If you fax to the same pharmacies regularly, save them in your AvoFax contacts for faster access.

Upload and preview the prescription
Attach the prescription PDF or scanned image. Use the preview screen to verify that all text is legible and the full prescription is visible. Pharmacies process faxed prescriptions based on what they receive, so a clear, complete fax avoids callbacks.
Tip: If the prescription is for a controlled substance (Schedule II-V), check your state's regulations — many states now require electronic prescribing (EPCS) instead of fax for controlled substances.
Send and save the confirmation
Tap Send. AvoFax transmits the prescription and provides a timestamped delivery confirmation in your Activity log. Keep this confirmation for your records — it serves as proof that the prescription was sent and received.
Common Questions
Is it legal to fax prescriptions?
Yes. Faxing prescriptions is legal and widely used in healthcare. For non-controlled substances, fax is accepted in all 50 US states. For controlled substances, requirements vary by state — many now mandate electronic prescribing (EPCS).
Can I fax a prescription from my phone?
Yes. The AvoFax mobile app lets you scan, upload, and fax a prescription directly from your iPhone or Android phone. It's especially useful for providers on rounds or working from satellite offices.
Is faxing a prescription HIPAA-compliant?
Fax is a HIPAA-compliant method for transmitting PHI when proper safeguards are in place. AvoFax encrypts transmissions, provides audit trails, and offers HIPAA plans with a Business Associate Agreement.
How do I know the pharmacy received the prescription?
AvoFax sends a delivery confirmation once the pharmacy's fax machine acknowledges receipt. You can view the status in your Activity tab at any time.
What if the pharmacy's fax line is busy?
AvoFax automatically retries up to 3 times with built-in delays. Pharmacy fax lines can be busy during peak hours, but our retry logic handles this without any action from you.
